The road climbed the side of the valley back and forth in lazy curves, gaining in elevation until they were above the broad valley looking out to the mountains in the distance. The highest mountains in the distance still had spots of snow on the peaks.

Her aunt’s cabin was a few miles outside of the small town, at a slighter higher elevation. She had loved coming to visit with her family as a child. There were lots of memories of idyllic sunny days spent hiking and evenings spent in front of the fireplace playing games and reading books. She and her mother used to cozy up on the couch, sharing a blanket and reading.

“Turn right at the next driveway with the name ‘Meadowlark Cabin’ painted on it,” she said. “Meadowlarks nest in the grass around the cabin.” She leaned forward trying to peer ahead.

He turned at the red mailbox and drove up the long gravel driveway. There was a mix of pine and deciduous trees with mountain meadows full of wildflowers. The cabin had a high steep roof and wide porch in front with a sweeping view of the valley and road. An old Jeep was parked in front.

“There’s his car. Pull up there.” Unclipping her belt, she jumped out of the truck as they pulled up next to Bobby’s SUV. She looked back to see Naberius park and jump out after her. She ran up the path and yelled for her brother. “Bobby!”

The cabin door flew open. She gave a little yelp at the sight of Bobby, standing there in running clothes, a big smile on his face. His dark curly hair stuck out like a little halo around his head.

“Jess! You’re here!” Bobby threw his arms around her and hugged her hard.

They hadn’t seen each other much in the last year. Bobby was tall and slim, with a chiseled jaw and the aquiline Weiss nose. It was his smile that turned him from regular nice-looking hipster into handsome. A megawatt movie smile that curved up to dimples, infectious and sweet. When Bobby smiled, people always smiled back.

Her eyes stung, and she started sobbing in relief. “I was so worried for you.” Trembling a little thinking of his friend, she hugged him tightly.

“Ouch! You’ve been lifting weights or something?” he teased.

She wrinkled her forehead. “Did you leave town because of Jay Lee Boynton at the bar? Did you call the police about a beating? Maelcom found a report and the guy survived. What happened?” Her voice came out sharp and angry. Stupid to be so happy to see someone and at the same time furious with them.

Bobby’s smile fell away, and he grimaced unhappily. “You met Maelcom? Trust him to figure it out. So yeah, Jay Lee owns the club where I was doing a gig, and he threatened me because I saw him beat up this guy. I decided to leave town because he said he was gonna hurt me.” Bobby’s mouth twisted. “I’m sorry, Jess.”

Her anger faded with the emotional release from shouting.
